Welcome back to Girls vs Tourism!
If you're thinking about travelling but wondering whether travelling alone or with a friend to a country is safe for women, you've come to the right place. Travelling abroad is something we recommend to everyone, regardless of gender identity, but we especially encourage female travellers to get out and explore the world if they can.
Travelling alone or with a friend is a big step out of your comfort zone and can be very daunting. As for the decision to travel together and the choice of destination, it has been a very long process, with all sorts of fears, questions and doubts going through our minds. We discussed where we wanted to go, what we wanted to see, and which safe cities and countries were nearby. So first, we travelled to nearby cities like Trieste, Zagreb, Vienna, and Budapest. This has certainly helped us lose our fear of travelling and our confidence to venture to destinations further afield, such as London, Oslo, and Amsterdam. When travelling alone, it is essential to find out where and how to get help. Unfortunately, for us women, there are various additional safety elements to consider - but as female travellers will agree, we cannot let that stop us from travelling and enjoying life. Travelling can be perfectly safe for women because bad things can happen anywhere, but don't let that stop you.
You should be aware that pre-travel jitters are completely normal. Whether it's your first trip or your 10th. It's certainly good to be more cautious, but you'll find that your jitters will evaporate once you've taken the trip.
Get over that fear and go, that's the hardest part, but it's worth it. Even though we are strong and independent women, we still require a community, a safe space where talking about and writing about our experiences is never a burden.
Till next time. :)
