Donating money to a fake cause, only to find out later that you were just scammed?

Dubrovnik is a wonderful, cultural, and historical city on the Adriatic Sea. It is an ideal destination for travellers who want to explore this unique city. You can walk along the very famous walls and enjoy a stunning view of the city below.

We have already visited Dubrovnik many times, as their local cuisine is superb. Speaking of their nightlife culture, we can only say that we love Dubrovnik.

Like every year, two years ago we went on vacation to the Mediterranean Sea, because for us there is no summer without our Croatia, where our hearts, stomachs, and cameras are full. As we walk down the street to the beach, a middle-aged woman stops us and asks us if we are from here and how we are feeling here. She seemed kind to us, so we kindly replied that we are on vacation and that we are enjoying ourselves immensely here and feel at home.

When she starts talking about her life story, we listen to her because we don't want to be rude by just walking away from her. She talked about her son, saying that he was sick, that he had cancer, and that they urgently needed money. We told her that we understand her and that we sympathize with them, but that we do not have much money as we are students. We wished her luck, and after that, she stopped us again and started talking about the fact that they are registered in a fund for oncology patients, and she asked if we wanted to sign and donate some of our money if we were really kind-hearted people, as we seemed. We signed, but only with our names, and each donated 20 HRK (Croatian kunas) at the time. The woman thanks us, and we move on when we see a man about our age watching us. We just keep going around the bend, and in the next street, we stop, look back, and see that this man who was watching us is interacting with the woman we were talking to.

We stop the local woman and ask if she knows anything about them. He tells us that these are typical domestic scammers who are scamming tourists. The lesson of the story is to avoid such situations and save yourself time and money. Unfortunately, we keep falling into such situations because we don't want to be rude, but we realize that it would be better to just move away from them.

A part of us never wants to leave Dubrovnik; find us near the Mediterranean Sea.

Till next time. :)
